Teaching Students with Disabilities

  • The Justice Institute of BC has published an excellent resource to help instructors to understand the potential impact of various disabilities on learning, and how to support access in the post-secondary setting: Supporting Students with Disabilities in British Columbia
  • Consider cutting and pasting the statement below into your course outlines, and making an announcement in class as well.

"VIU's Accessibility Services provides services to students with Learning Disabilities (LD), psychiatric/mental health disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), chronic medical conditions, and impairments in mobility, hearing, and vision. If you have a disability requiring academic accommodations in this course but are not yet registered with Accessibility Services, please contact them at AccessibilityServices@viu.ca or visit them in BLDG 255 (2nd floor). If you are already registered with Accessibility Services, please provide me with your accommodation letter, either in person during my office hours, or by email."
